Sustainable agriculture at Blaston Farm
Sustainable agriculture at Blaston Farm
Find out more about when we headed to Blaston farm in Leicestershire to meet Hylton Murray Philipson, one of the amazing partners involved in our carbon strategy.
As we munched on apples picked straight from the tree, we learnt all about Hyltons background, his journey to regenerative agriculture, and met a cow or two along the way!
Hylton believes in farming in a responsible, sustainable, and regenerative way. By adopting techniques such as direct drilling of arable crops, continuous soil crops, diverse crop rotations, and integrated livestock grazing, Hylton’s creating a sustainable business producing nutritious food whilst sequestering carbon.
As he showed us round his farm, Hylton elaborated on the process and how it differs to compensating through planting trees. “A tree takes about 15 years until it gets into its peak sequestration mode” he explained, “I'm not sure that we have 15 years to play with here. The really exciting thing about this soil that we are standing on is that you can make a difference between this year and next year, its immediate.”
Hylton’s farm Blaston is, amazingly, one of the first farms in the country to measure carbon in the soil and turn the ‘increase’ every year into ‘carbon credits’.
“What is really exciting about this place here at Blaston is that we are in the process of generating the very first measured soil carbon credits in the country” Hylton continues. “That’s basically what DASH is supporting which is so exciting because what it means is that everybody can now follow what I’ve done which is quite difficult, quite challenging, quite expensive. You can now tap into a system of reward that makes it financially viable to do what I know in my bones is the right thing to do and that is soil carbon credits.”
So by purchasing carbon credits through Hylton, we are compensating for our emissions footprint, whilst supporting a British farm doing great things for the environment.
Jack Scott our Co-Founder adds “Our certificates from Blaston are a key part of ensuring DASH fully compensates for its emissions footprint and remains so. We have been to Blaston, we know the team and the land and we are delighted to support a British farm doing great things for the environment.”
Here at DASH we couldn’t be more excited to be part of this incredible journey.
Good for the soil, good for biodiversity and good for the planet.
