Five easy ways to go green at home
Five easy ways to go green at home
Here at Dash, we’re supporting World Environment Day by taking part in their #OnlyOneEarth campaign, which aims to build awareness around climate action and encourage everyone to live a greener life.
While key actions against climate change must lie with governments and major organisations, we can still help make an impact as individuals by speaking up and making sustainable changes to our lifestyle.
To help you be more environmentally friendly, we’ve put together the five most important things you can do to go green at home. The more people who make changes like these, the closer we can get to protecting our planet.
Eat Less Meat
Eating less meat is one of the most effective ways to go green at home, as it reduces the demand on the meat industry which is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. There’s no need to go completely plant-based either; just replacing a few meat dishes a week can reduce your carbon footprint significantly.
Buy Second Hand Clothes
The fashion industry is another big player when it comes to climate change, largely due to its water consumption and shipping emissions. Limiting the amount of clothes you buy in a year is an easy way to live greener because we often buy things we don’t need. When you do buy, try to shop second hand or with sustainable brands.
Reduce Food Waste
Combating food waste is something we’re very passionate about here at Dash, as it’s a growing problem with many ways to minimise.
Discarded food that ends up in landfill emits an extremely high amount of harmful greenhouse gases, and yet more food ends up there than there needs to be. To go green at home, it’s important to use up any leftovers and be mindful of the food you throw away. Follow our tips on How to Reduce Food Waste for more guidance.
Minimise Packaging
Many products use excessive amounts of packaging which ends up in landfill. When you’re at a supermarket, try to choose products that aren’t wrapped in plastic. When ordering online, see if there’s an option to request less packaging or try to combine your orders if buying multiple items. It’s best to avoid any unnecessary gift wrapping options too.
Make your Energy Consumption Greener
Changing to a more sustainable energy provider is an effective way to go green at home. However, many green energy organisations provide a ‘fuel mix’, which includes some renewable-sourced energy and some fossil fuels.
Because of this, it’s still important to reduce the amount of energy you use. Switch off any electrics when you’re not using them, choose energy-saving light bulbs, and limit the amount of times you use your washer and dryer.
We hope you found our tips on living a greener life useful. Climate-conscious choices may seem small, but they can make a big impact.
As well as going green at home, we also encourage you to join in the World Environment Day conversation on social media by sharing the hashtag #OnlyOneEarth. By speaking up about climate change, we can raise awareness and send our message to those who have a significant ability to make a change..
